Robert Motherwell (1915 - 1991) was an American abstract expressionist painter and printmaker. He was one of the youngest of the New York School, which also included Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko.

Motherwell was known for his philosophical approach to painting and his interest in literature, politics, and existential themes. In 1981, he developed the Octavio Paz Suite in collaboration with the esteemed Mexican poet, who shared Motherwell’s interest in exploring existential and cultural themes, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1990. The series was inspired by Paz's poems, capturing the emotional landscape of Mexican identity, love, and existential reflection. Each work in the series, including Mexico City Personage, reflects an abstract interpretation of Paz’s thoughts and Mexico’s cultural essence.

This minimalist approach highlights Motherwell's signature style: the gestural, spontaneous use of form and line that speaks to the emotional depth rather than representational accuracy. The piece captures an imagined “personage,” symbolizing perhaps a sense of national identity or individual presence within the vast, vibrant landscape of Mexico City.
